The Blue Hill Public Library is hosting a new exhibit, The Blue Chair of Dreams, by Christopher Scott Brumfield, in the library’s Britton Gallery and Howard Room for the month of December. The exhibit features sculptures in porcelain, recycled glass, and glaze, each of which is displayed with a haiku that Brumfield wrote for it. The public is invited to a closing reception at the library on Monday, December 30, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Christopher says that the sculptures are about language and figurative form. He explains, “I have been researching the earliest examples of written language and looking at shape and form. The similarities between biological forms and the symbols that we use to represent ideas is very apparent. From microscopic organelles in cells to the largest galaxy clusters, certain forms repeat.  From ancient cave art to today’s emojis we use symbols to represent our feelings, our ideas, and the things we see in the world. I explored these shapes and symbols in the wall pieces that make up the show The Blue Chair of Dreams.”

Christopher Scott Brumfield is an artist from South Louisiana who has been working in ceramics since 1994. He finished his graduate studies at Tulane University in 2001 and has participated in over 100 exhibitions, including 14 solo shows.  He is currently an Associate Professor of art at Baton Rouge Community College, where he has taught ceramics, sculpture, pottery, and art history. Christopher says he primarily uses the color blue in his sculptures, because he decided that “one lifetime is barely enough time to pursue one color,” so he is staying focused.

Christopher divides his time between Blue Hill and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He cohabitates with his husband, 3 dogs, and 400 or so house plants.

The exhibit is available for viewing through December 30th during library hours, subject to the Howard Room meeting schedule.
